Dinner for Unity

Unity in diversity. What better a place to demonstrate this eternal motto than a place as diverse as the U.S, in a city as multicultural as Fremont? Indo-American Community Federation (IACF), a Fremont based non-profit organization, is hosting a "Unity Dinner" to send out the message that we all need to stand together as American. Especially in the wake of 9/11. "After Sept. 11 (2001) it has become all the more important to understand each other's culture and unite the community, and also educate the mainstream about the culture, "says Jeevan Zutshi of IACF.

Keynote speaker for the event is Sharon Davis. Other guests include Congressman Pete Stark, State Senator Liz Figueroa, Assembly member John Dutra, Controller Steve Westly, Attorney General Bill Lockyer, as well as elected officials from Fremont city. 

Unity Dinner 2003 features a line-up of a variety cultural performances-bharata natyam recital by Indumathy Ganesh, bhangra-all part of the evening's entertainment.

The cultural richness of the American people will also be visible by the presence of members of other cultures, like the Chinese group Citizens for Better Community; Afghan Coalition, Hispanic Association, an Italian group.

"We all need to stand together, "says Zutshi adding that realization comes from understanding other cultures and religions.

IACF is a seven-year-old organization that is trying to bring the Indian-American community closer to the mainstream. While engaged in this cause,  the organization has also been involved in the enrichment of various aspects of the Indian and Indian-American community.

Some of their past activities have included organizing a fundraiser to help victim of terrorism in Kargil, India; holding international seminars on terrorism in Indian state of Kashmir; assist in the study of gang problems amongst Indian-Americans to help Gang Task Force of Alameda county; organizing fundraiser to help start Home of Home orphanage in Indian; promote, support, and enhance a positive business environment and thus increase participation of Indian-Americans in various philanthropic activities through Fremont Chamber of Commerce; benefit youth and education through active participation of Indian-Americans in Ohlone College Foundation.
